5 Ways to Save Energy and Save Money

Improving your home’s energy efficiency can also help you improve your cash flow.  Here are 5 simple ways to start saving energy and money.

1.       Only do full loads
Make sure you are only doing the dishes or a load of laundry when there’s enough for a full load.  Wasting energy and water on small loads can really add up.  Also, look into front loading washers and dryers that are more energy efficient.

2.       Lower the thermostat
Or get a programmable one.   When no one is home make sure to adjust your thermostat to conserve energy.  Also, if a room is never used, close the air vents and shut the door to save even more energy.

3.       Do away with drafts
Drafts can reduce a home’s energy efficiency by 5 to 30 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.  Remove and replace caulk and add weather strips around windows.

4.       Unplug things when not in use
Make sure you unplug appliances, hair dryers, and lights when they are not in use.  Also, be sure to turn off lights when you leave a room.

5.       Add insulation
Insulation is one of the best ways to save energy.  Add more insulation between walls and make sure your attic floor is well covered.

Be sure to check your state-specific energy efficiency tax credits available to consumers.
