One of life’s greatest pleasures is eating out - no cooking and no mess to clean up. But, when people evaluate their spending, this is usually the expense item that causes them to go over their established budget. Here are some tips to keep in mind that will help you save money and still eat out.
-
Coupons
There are many websites that offer restaurant coupons, and you can also buy entertainment books that offer coupons as well.
-
Clubs and Email Lists
Most restaurants offer special club discounts like “birthday or anniversary clubs,” and if you visit their website, you can sign-up to receive special email offers on a regular basis.
-
Split Meals
Restaurant size portions are not your standard portion size and what a waste of food if you don’t finish. If you are dining out with your spouse or friends, ask what everyone is getting and see if there is an opportunity to split a meal with someone.
-
Order Water
On my bill the other day, my soda was $2.50. I was so surprised at this and wished I would have just ordered the water. This saves $5 for just 2 of you. Also, make sure to ask what other beverages cost, you might be surprised what an adult beverage will cost you at a restaurant.

Get it to Go
I always say it is important to tip, but one great way to avoid this is to either go to a restaurant that is “self-serve” or order take-out. Pick up your pizza on the way home rather than ordering when you get home to avoid the delivery tip. I think it’s great how most restaurants have to go parking so you are right by the door.

Kids Eat Free
Most restaurants offer a “kids eat free” night, and some even have special activities as well. You also don’t have to worry as much that your kids are bothering the table next to you because, likely, it’ll be another table full of kids as well.
