Because tipping is a customary practice in our society, it’s important to know good tipping etiquette as well as where you can save money by avoiding tipping.
What is the appropriate amount to tip?
-
The suggested tip for restaurant servers is 15-20% of your pretax bill.
-
Tipping your hairstylist would also be 15-20% of the total service amount.
-
It is suggested that you tip a doorman $1 per bag that is handled. The same goes for skycaps at the airport.
-
For coffee and food retailers, the tip is optional when a tip jar is set out.
How can you save money by avoiding the need to tip?
-
Choose carryout instead of delivery when you are ordering a meal out.
-
Go to self-serve restaurants that don’t require tips. Try Panera, McAlister’s, Subway, etc.
-
Valet parking might be tempting, but just say no. Walk a little further and you won’t have to worry about tipping.
-
If you’re traveling abroad, find out what the tipping customs are. You may not need to tip!
-
Don’t order room service in a hotel. Stop at a convenient store for snacks beforehand.
