Eating Cheap on Campus

Groceries and eating out can get pretty expensive when you’re on a college budget.  Below are a few tips to help you save some money on food in college.
  • One of the first steps to help you start saving is to track your actual spending for a month.  You’d be surprised at how the little things add up.  This will help you make adjustments in certain areas.  After you’ve tracked your spending for a month, create a budget and stick to it.
  • Ramen Noodles.  Need I say more?
  • Go to restaurants that don't require tipping a server.  This doesn't have to be fast food either.  What about Panera Bread, Five Guys, or Subway?
  • Want to have dinner with a group of friends?  Do a pitch-in where each individual brings one item.
  • Don't purchase a beverage at a restaurant.  Ask for water instead.
  • Order a meal that will guarantee you have leftovers.  That way you can stretch your money and also have food for a meal later on.
  • Use "Buy One Get One Free" coupons and split the cost of a meal with a friend.
  • Go to restaurants with specials (ex. Cici's Pizza is $2.99 for all you can eat).
  • Sign up for frequent diner cards that will give you a free meal after purchasing a certain number of meals.
  • Use coupons at the grocery store and at restaurants.
  • Plan your meals in advance.  This will help you avoid eating out.
