Save Money on Heating this Winter

Winter heating bills can really put a chill on your finances. Here are a few tips to help save money on your heating this season.

Insulate
Make sure windows and doors are properly sealed. There are a couple places people forget to check such as fireplaces (make sure to close the damper when not in use); dryer vents (install a dryer vent seal), and the attic (entryways should be weather stripped and insulated).

Let the Light In
Open curtains and blinds during the day to let natural light and heat in and close them during the night to retain the heat.

Use a Ceiling Fan
You don’t normally think of using a fan when it’s cold, but as we all know, warm air rises. Keep the ceiling fan on low during the winter to push the warm air down. If you can, reverse the fan blades to push the air up and around the room.

Adjust the Thermostat
Turn the heat down during the night and while your house is unoccupied. You may want to invest in a programmable thermostat.

Lay Down Rugs
If you have hard wood floors or tile, use rugs. While the rug won’t keep your house any warmer, you’ll be less tempted to turn up the heat if your feet are warm.

Use a Humidifier
A humidifier has many benefits during the winter, and moist air retains heat better than dry.

If you don't like the look and/or feel of rugs on your hardwood floors, a simple and equally effective strategy to keep your feet warm is to wear socks. :)
