People often struggle with budgeting, and they tend to break their budget every month. The reasons vary and yet most of the reasons people fail at budgeting can be fixed with a little effort and willingness to make minor changes to lifestyle habits.

What are some of the reasons people struggle with budgeting?
The primary reason people struggle with staying on track with their budget is that their income is less than their expenses. This might be because they are not honest with their discretionary spending or they didn’t really account for the true cost of all their fixed expenses when building their budget. Another common reason people fail at budgeting is that they don’t build any room for unexpected expenses. And for most people, every month comes with an expense that wasn’t planned.

Is there another reason people struggle with staying on budget?
Many times, budget struggles are based on a person’s lifestyle habits. If people don’t change their habits, their budget will often break very early in the month. One contributing bad habit includes impulse buying instead of waiting to buy something when it fits the budget or until it has been saved for. It’s also important to comparison shop before making purchases.

What are ways we can improve our budgeting efforts?
Start by finding the right budget for your specific issue. Perhaps you need a full budget such as the 50 30 20 budget, or maybe you just need a spending budget because your real problem is your discretionary spending. If you limit how much you can spend each week, then you’ll stay within your monthly budget. For many people their budget woes can be solved just by budgeting for unexpected expenses each month like baby showers, birthday gifts, and car repairs. Building an emergency fund is helpful for when these items come up.

What are some difficult choices people might need to make?
One of the most difficult moves is changing your lifestyle habits. Some people make a very good income and because they feel they are doing great with income they believe they can spend whatever they want. This often leads to overspending and a broken budget. Creating a spending plan to curb impulse purchases each month will help this. The other situation is when people have overcommitted themselves with “fixed” expenses such as rent, a house payment, or auto loans. They might need to lower those costs and perhaps some of their streaming costs to make sure their fixed expenses fit their current income situation. Alternatively, they could find a way to increase their income to fit their current spending situation.
