ATM Safety Tips

10/10/2025

No matter the location or time of day you’re accessing an ATM, it’s important to stay safe by following a few simple guidelines. If anything seems suspicious, cancel your transaction and leave.

Prepare Your Transaction in Advance – Minimize the time you spend at the ATM by preparing any necessary deposit slip in advance.

Choose a Safe Location – Look for ATMs in well-lit, high-traffic areas, such as inside banks or grocery stores. Avoid secluded or poorly lit areas, especially at night.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings – Scan the area for anyone who seems to be loitering or appears to be watching you. Avoid your phone, stay aware, and trust your instincts.

Check the ATM for Tampering – Visually inspect the card reader and keypad for any signs of a “skimmer” device, such as loose parts, unusual stickers, or sticky residue.

Shield Your PIN – Use your hand or body to block the view of anyone who might be trying to see your PIN.

Don’t Accept Assistance – If a stranger offers to help with your transaction, decline and leave. This tactic can be used to distract you while an accomplice steals your card or cash.

Look for Contactless or Cardless Options – New ATMs let you tap your card or use a mobile app for withdrawals, which is safer than swiping because it encrypts your data and blocks skimmers.

Bring a Friend – When you can, use ATMs with a friend, especially at night.

Leave Promptly – Leave the ATM promptly after you finish your transaction and secure your wallet and card.
