Improving your personal cash flow

Often, we think cash flow is only a business concern and yet for our own personal financial situation cash flow is really important. If we can generate more income than expenses, then we can have funds to save more and eventually improve our overall financial situation. Solving cash flow problems can be achieved using several different strategies.
Why is improving your personal cash flow so important?
Cash flow, which is the amount of money coming in compared to the amount that is going out, is what allows you to build your financial life. If you can increase your cash flow, then you can build all different types of savings from retirement to fun money. If you don’t manage your cash flow, then you are likely going to start building debt, which in the long term will only decrease your cash flow.
Where is the first place to start improving your cash flow?
When looking at your income, can you work a side gig or monetize your hobby or talent? Adding extra income in this way will be the fastest way to improve cash flow. There is also a long-term effort which requires improving your skills so that you become more valuable to your employer or become coveted by other companies because of your skill. The ability to increase earning potential is a great strategy for improving your overall cash flow.
Besides increasing income, is there another way to improve cash flow?
This requires working on expenses. This might mean trying to pay off debts with high payments or refinancing debt to lower the payment. Other ways include lowering your living space expenses by downsizing or adding a roommate. Perhaps it is trading down in cars, or refinancing to increase the payment, or considering leasing if that is an option. Sometimes couples who work hybrid or remotely or even work close to each other realize they don’t need two vehicles. This can be a big savings because you eliminate car payments, insurance, and maintenance costs.
How else can we work on improving cash flow?
It might require simplifying your life and looking for many small changes, especially in spending (particularly if you like to purchase things or have several expensive activities that you enjoy). You might have to be more frugal with your life and focus your spending on what you really enjoy. Sometimes this might require more advance planning with your spending. This means becoming a more deliberate shopper and looking for the best prices and waiting for items to go on sale before purchasing. You might even create a “purchasing” plan that includes timing, so you don’t stress your cash flow.
