TrueStory: FORUM Community Day

Please join us for our first FORUM Community Day on Saturday, October 18th between 3:00pm and 6:00pm. We have much to celebrate including 50 years of being headquartered in Fishers, as well as 84 years of helping members live their financial dreams.

In 1975, FORUM relocated its headquarters from Indianapolis to a small town called Fishers. At the time, Mr. John Jeter served as CEO of Indiana Telco Federal Credit Union, which was renamed to FORUM in 2000. When asked about his remarkable vision to relocate to Fishers, in his typical humble manner, he explained that the selection of the parcel of land was based solely on what the Credit Union could afford. He would recount the story of trying to find a convenient location by sticking close to Interstate 69 and progressively moving north until a parcel of land was affordable enough for the Credit Union to purchase. Our original Fishers headquarters was located at the site where Topgolf currently stands. It was an innovative facility as it was Indiana’s first solar-powered office building. For many years, we were ahead of our time in Fishers. When I started my career with the Credit Union in 1988, there were only two available lunch options: McDonalds (still there today) and Archers Deli. Fast forward to today, and the number of dining options available makes for a difficult decision with so many choices in our city. The sale of this building and parcel of land enabled our relocation to our present facility on USA Parkway in 1991. Now our USA Parkway neighborhood is thriving with nearby highlights like the Fishers Events Center (featuring the FORUM Credit Union Plaza), IKEA, The Slate, and the upcoming addition of The Union within the Fishers District.

We are proud to call Fishers home, and we appreciate the opportunity to contribute to our community. We thank City of Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness for recognizing our 50 years of impact and we look forward to continuing this for many more years. In addition to the 50-year milestone, we are also celebrating 84 years of serving our members since our founding by Indiana Bell Telephone employees in 1941. We are fortunate a small group of Bell Telephone employees had the courage and resolve to start the Credit Union to help their fellow workers and family members. During the challenging economic period from the late 1930s through the 1940s, credit unions were established throughout America with the primary goal of assisting individuals in saving money through fair dividend rates on savings accounts. These pooled funds were then utilized to provide low-interest loans to members for their borrowing needs. Eight-four years later and this remains unchanged -– we take money in for deposit from our members and member businesses and loan it out to our members and member businesses. We are proud to say every penny on deposit at the Credit Union is loaned out to your fellow members. This is what not-for-profit financial cooperatives (credit unions) do for their members and communities, and this is why we are also celebrating International Credit Union Day (Thursday, October 16) during our Community Day on Saturday, October 18. Again, please accept our invitation and join us to celebrate you, fellow members, our FORUM teammates, and credit unions globally – all of whom contribute meaningfully to positive change.
