If you’ve scrolled TikTok lately…you may have seen “finfluencers” claiming that 401(k)s are a scam. But much of that content is misleading — and in some cases, dangerous. Today, we’re setting the record straight by explaining the reasons why a 401(k) is for most people the best retirement savings option available to them.

Recently there have been videos online calling 401(k)s a scam. What’s really driving this misinformation?
A lot of this comes from so called “finfluencers” on TikTok who are not licensed experts. Many of them are trying to sell commission based financial products, so it benefits them to create fear or confusion. The problem is that misinformation can push people away from smart, proven retirement tools. The truth is, a 401(k) is one of the most powerful ways for everyday people to build long term wealth.

One of the biggest advantages of a 401(k) is the employer match. Why is that basically free money?
If your company offers a match, all you have to do is contribute enough to get it — and they put in extra money on your behalf.  If you earn sixty thousand dollars and contribute five percent, and your employer matches five percent, that’s an extra three thousand dollars a year you didn’t have to earn. No investment grows faster than money your employer gives you for participating. Skipping the match is literally leaving free money on the table.

A lot of people say they don’t want their money locked up, or they’re worried about the market crashing. How do you respond to that?
It’s true that 401(k)s are designed for retirement — that’s why there are age rules for withdrawing. But that structure is what helps people stay disciplined and build long term savings. As for market fears: yes, the market moves up and down. But over decades, it has historically grown, and diversification helps reduce risk. A 401(k) gives you access to a wide mix of investments, which helps smooth out the ups and downs. Long term investors have seen strong growth over time, even through recessions and downturns.

For those who want to get the most out of their 401(k), what are a few smart steps to take right now?
First, contribute enough to get your full employer match — that’s step one. Second, increase your contributions a little each year, especially when you get a raise. Third, choose a diversified mix of investments that match your long term goals. And finally, avoid borrowing from your 401(k) unless it’s an emergency, because it can derail your long term growth. If your plan offers access to a financial advisor or consultant, take advantage of that guidance.
